Here is this week's second Awesome Little Extra:
Children have a natural ability to seize the moment, and enjoy it without restriction. I had so much fun dancing and being silly with my children for the first extra!
Another characteristic that makes children more ready for God’s kingdom than adults is their ability to accept a gift without any hesitation. There’s no worry about the gift not meeting expectations, no concern over not deserving the gift, not a single need for there to be any sort of celebration or reason for getting it. They are just thrilled to get something, and they rush to see what it is.
And let’s face it, as adults, it is so rewarding to see their excitement, to hear their squeals of delight, to feel their energy! As a parent, I love it!
How much more so for God, who daily gives us gifts of grace and salvation and love. As adults, we try to rationalize why we do or don’t deserve those gifts. We worry, obsessively at times, that we aren’t going to be good enough, that God will not really extend those gifts to us. After all, we mess up, we haven’t done anything special, we are not worthy.
And yet, God does offer those gifts to us. That’s why He wants us to be like children. He doesn’t want us to worry about the gifts, He wants us to tear into things, shred the wrapping paper in our haste, and embrace this gift of life like a child would.
To help remind myself what that looks like, I surprised my children with small gifts. I bought little bracelets that say “Love”, and we talked about how God gives us the gift of His love every day.
I hope their bracelets help them remember that. I know giving them their bracelets taught me how a gift should be received.
